Uzma Hanif

Every female must have surely heard that working out during the periods harms your body in a negative manner and this fact is not at all true as there is no scientific research to prove it.
Here some common myths about period workout are being debunked -

MYTH #1

YOUR BODY GETS FATIGUED EASILY -
The female hormones are quite low during periods. This makes the body even more capable of bearing pain during this time than normal days and hard workouts lead to faster recovery.

MYTH #2

HEAVY WORKOUTS MAKE YOU PASS OUT -
Working out on periods is perfectly alright even for those with a heavy flow. Estrogen levels are lowest at this point so workout makes you more strong from inside.

MYTH #3

YOU CANNOT SWIM DURING PERIODS -
This myth dates back to the time when tampons and menstrual cups were non existent.
Entering a swimming pool without protection was a concern from the hygiene perspective and tampons were wore while swimming because blood could leak out if you did not wear it.

                                                 BEST EXERCISES SUGGESTED

1) WALKING -
Being an easy exercise, it does not require any equipment, clothing or a specific location.        It requires less time than other workouts and speed can be adjusted according to one's           comfort level.

2) LIGHT CARDIO OR AEROBIC EXERCISE -
It is meant to be a light exercise and is not much stressful. It can be done in  a short                  amount of time on a cycle or in a pool. It is not very heavy on the joints as well.

3) STRENGTH TRAINING -
Focus on light weight strength training during this time and decrease the weight that you      normally lift. No heavy lifting is recommended during this time as it can affect the body          negatively.

4) GENTLE STRETCH AND BALANCING -
Yoga is great for muscle relaxation and menstrual cramping. Pilates is a good workout for       muscle stretch and the menstrual pain that occurs during this time.

ENSURING HYGIENE DURING PERIODS

1) Ensure a bath after your workout with a good soap or body wash.

2) Use an intimate area wash to ensure a thorough cleansing of the private part.

3) Underwear must be changed after the workout to ensure cleanliness and a fresh pad                 must be put immediately after the workout.
